Have You Noticed Your Staffy Constantly Licking Their Paws?
If you're reading this, there's a good chance you've looked over at your Staffy and wondered,
"Why won't they stop licking their paws?"
I know the feeling.
Like most Staffy owners, I've sat there watching one of my own dogs, wondering whether it was just a harmless habit or whether they were trying to tell me something.
The good news is that, in most cases, paw licking has a logical explanation.
Sometimes it's as simple as a grass seed caught between the toes after a walk.
Other times it may be be irritated skin, allergies, a small injury or even boredom.
The important thing is not to panic.
Your Staffy is simply communicating the best way they know how.
This guide has been written to help you understand the most common reasons Staffordshire Bull Terriers lick their paws, what you can safely check yourself, how to reduce the chance of future problems and when it's worth seeking additional help.
My goal isn't to scare you.
My goal is to help you become a more confident Staffy owner.
Because the more we understand our dogs, the better decisions we make for them.

Quick Answer
Persistent paw licking usually isn't "just a habit."
It's your Staffy's way of telling you something isn't quite right.
Some of the most common causes include:
- Allergies
- Yeast infections
- Grass seeds or small injuries
- Dry or cracked paw pads
- Parasites
- Anxiety or boredom
- Joint pain
- Poor skin health
The good news is that many of these issues can often be recognised early if you know what to look for.

What Is Normal Paw Licking?
Every dog licks their paws from time to time.
It's completely normal.
Dogs naturally groom themselves after walks, after playing outside or before settling down for a sleep.
If you occasionally notice your Staffy giving their paws a quick clean, there's usually nothing to worry about.
What isn't normal is persistent licking.
If your Staffy keeps returning to the same paw, spends several minutes licking at a time or starts doing it every day, they're usually trying to tell you something.
One thing owning Staffies has taught me is just how tough they are.
They'll often keep wagging their tails, playing with the family and acting completely normal, even when something is bothering them.
That's why small behavioural changes are often one of the earliest clues that deserve a closer l

When Should You Be Concerned?
One of the biggest mistakes owners make is either ignoring paw licking altogether or assuming the worst straight away.
The truth is usually somewhere in the middle.
A little licking every now and then isn't something I'd lose sleep over.
But if the behaviour becomes frequent, intense or starts damaging the skin, it's time to investigate why.
Ask yourself:
- Has the licking suddenly increased?
- Is it always the same paw?
- Are the paws becoming red?
- Is your Staffy chewing rather than simply licking?
- Does it happen every day?
- Have you noticed a smell coming from the paws?
If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, it's worth working through the possible causes.
Early Warning Signs
Sometimes it isn't the licking itself that tells you something is wrong.
It's the small changes that happen alongside it.
Look for:
- Redness between the toes
- Brown saliva staining
- Hair loss
- Swelling
- Cracked paw pads
- Limping
- Constant chewing
- Reluctance to walk
- A bad smell
-
If you notice... It may suggest... Red paws Allergies or irritation Bad smell Yeast or bacterial infection One swollen paw Grass seed or injury Cracked pads Dry or damaged paw pads Limping Injury or joint pain Constant chewing Ongoing discomfort or irritation
These signs don't automatically mean there's a serious problem.
But they do tell you your Staffy deserves a closer look.

Before You Panic…
One thing I'd really like you to remember before reading the rest of this guide is this:
Most cases of paw licking aren't emergencies.
It's easy to jump straight to the worst-case scenario after searching online.
But in reality, many cases are caused by things like irritated skin, allergies, a grass seed or another problem that can often be identified early.
That's exactly why I created this guide.
Not to make you worry...
But to help you understand what your Staffy might be trying to tell you.
The more you understand your dog, the more confident you'll become in recognising what's normal and what's worth investigating.
The 8 Most Common Causes of Paw Licking
Paw licking isn't a diagnosis.
It's a symptom.
Think of it as your Staffy's way of saying:
"Something doesn't feel right."
The trick isn't simply stopping the licking.
It's working out what's causing it.
Let's look at the most common reasons Staffies lick their paws.
1. Allergies
Allergies are one of the most common reasons Staffordshire Bull Terriers lick their paws.
Unfortunately, Staffies are well known for having sensitive skin, and when allergies develop, the paws are often one of the first places you'll notice a problem.
Unlike people who usually sneeze when they have allergies, dogs often become itchy instead.
That itch can lead to constant licking, chewing and scratching.
Common allergy triggers include:
- Grass and pollen
- Dust mites
- Mould
- Certain proteins in food
- Household cleaning products
- Flea bites
You may also notice:
- Red skin between the toes
- Ear infections
- Itchy face
- Belly rashes
- Frequent scratching
Many owners assume allergies appear overnight, but they often develop gradually over months or even years.

2. Environmental Irritants
Sometimes your Staffy's paws are simply reacting to something they've walked through.
Think about where they've been over the last day or two.
Possible irritants include:
- Freshly cut grass
- Lawn fertilisers
- Weed killers
- Hot pavement
- Beach sand
- Saltwater
- Mud
- Bark chips
After a walk, have a quick look at their paws.
A simple rinse with clean water can often remove pollen, dust and other irritants before they cause ongoing discomfort.
It's a small habit that can make a big difference.

3. Grass Seeds and Small Injuries
One tiny grass seed can cause a surprisingly big problem.
They can work their way between the toes or into the skin, making every step uncomfortable.
Likewise, small cuts, splinters, cracked paw pads or tiny stones caught between the toes can all trigger persistent licking.
After every walk, take 30 seconds to check:
- Between each toe
- Around the nails
- Paw pads
- Around the dew claw
- For swelling or tenderness
Early checks often prevent much bigger problems later.
4. Yeast or Bacterial Infections
When paws stay moist from constant licking, yeast and bacteria can begin to multiply.
This creates a frustrating cycle:
Itchy paws → licking → moisture → infection → even more itching.
Common signs include:
- Brown saliva staining
- A noticeable smell
- Red inflamed skin
- Sticky skin between the toes
- Constant chewing
Breaking this cycle early is much easier than treating a long-standing infection.
5. Dry or Cracked Paw Pads
Just like our own skin, paw pads can become dry and cracked.
Walking on:
- Hot roads
- Rough gravel
- Dry summer ground
- Long bush tracks
can all leave paws sore.
Dry pads usually improve with time, protection and avoiding harsh surfaces while they heal.
6. Joint Pain or Arthritis
Sometimes the problem isn't actually the paw.
Older Staffies, or dogs with sore joints, may lick an area because it's painful.
Owners often assume the paw itself is the issue, when the discomfort may actually be coming from:
- Wrists
- Elbows
- Shoulders
- Knees
If your Staffy seems stiff after resting or slower on walks as well as licking, it's worth considering whether joint discomfort could be contributing.
7. Anxiety or Boredom
Not every case of paw licking starts with a physical problem.
Some dogs lick because it helps them self-soothe.
Just like some people bite their nails when stressed, dogs sometimes lick their paws when they feel anxious or under-stimulated.
This can happen if they're:
- Left alone for long periods
- Not getting enough mental stimulation
- Feeling stressed by changes at home
- Simply bored
The licking often becomes a habit, even after the original reason has disappeared.

8. Poor Overall Skin Health
Healthy paws begin with a healthy body.
Skin is the body's largest organ, and when nutrition isn't supporting healthy skin, the paws are often one of the first places to show it.
That's why supporting overall wellbeing can play an important role alongside treating the immediate cause of the licking.
A healthy diet, good hydration and appropriate daily nutritional support all contribute to healthier skin, stronger paws and a healthier coat.
This isn't about finding a quick fix.
It's about giving your Staffy the best chance of staying healthy long-term.
Every Staffy Is Different
One thing I've learned over the years is that no two Staffies are exactly alike.
Two dogs can show the same behaviour for completely different reasons.
That's why it's important not to jump to conclusions.
Instead, use this guide as a process of elimination.
Observe your Staffy.
Look for clues.
Work through the possibilities one by one.
More often than not, the answer becomes much clearer once you slow down and really pay attention to what your dog is telling you.
How to Check Your Staffy's Paws at Home
One of the best things you can do as a Staffy owner is get comfortable checking your dog's paws yourself.
It only takes a few minutes and can often help you spot small issues before they become much bigger problems.
The key is to stay calm.
Your Staffy will usually mirror your energy. If you're relaxed and gentle, they'll quickly learn that paw checks are just another part of being looked after.

Step 1 – Start with a Visual Check
Begin by simply looking at each paw.
Compare one paw to the others.
Ask yourself:
- Does one look redder?
- Is there any swelling?
- Are the nails healthy?
- Is there any discharge?
- Does one paw look different?
Quite often, the affected paw stands out once you compare them side by side.
Step 2 – Check Between the Toes
Gently spread each toe apart.
Look for:
- Grass seeds
- Cuts
- Small stones
- Redness
- Moist skin
- Unpleasant odour
This is one of the most common places for problems to hide.
Step 3 – Feel the Paw Pads
Run your fingers over each paw pad.
Healthy pads should feel:
- Firm
- Smooth
- Slightly rough for grip
- Free from cracks
If they feel split, soft or painful, they may need some extra care.
Step 4 – Watch Your Staffy Walk
Sometimes the problem becomes obvious once your dog starts moving.
Notice if they:
- Favour one leg
- Limp
- Walk differently on grass compared with concrete
- Stop during walks
- Frequently lift one paw
Movement often tells you more than a visual inspection.
Step 5 – Monitor the Behaviour
Rather than focusing on one moment, pay attention over several days.
Ask yourself:
- Is the licking getting worse?
- Is it becoming less frequent?
- Is it always after walks?
- Is it mainly at night?
- Is it happening after meals?
- Is it only one paw?
Patterns often provide valuable clues.
Common Signs Something Isn't Right

Keep an eye out for:
- Persistent licking
- Constant chewing
- Red or inflamed skin
- Brown saliva staining
- Hair loss
- Bad smell
- Swollen toes
- Cracked pads
- Bleeding
- Limping
- Reluctance to exercise
These signs don't always indicate a serious problem, but they do suggest it's worth investigating further.
Daily Paw Care & Prevention
Preventing paw problems is usually much easier than treating them.
A few simple habits can make a big difference over time.

Build These Habits
✓ Check paws after walks.
✓ Keep nails trimmed.
✓ Remove mud and debris.
✓ Dry paws after swimming.
✓ Avoid very hot pavement.
✓ Watch for seasonal allergy flare-ups.
✓ Maintain a healthy body weight.
✓ Feed a balanced diet that supports healthy skin.
✓ Provide plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.
✓ Give your Staffy regular opportunities to rest and recover.
Healthy paws are usually the result of lots of small good habits rather than one big solution.
When Home Care Isn't Enough
One of the aims of this guide is to help you feel more confident.
Many minor issues can be recognised early and monitored carefully at home.
However, there are times when it's sensible to seek professional advice.
If your Staffy has:
- Significant swelling
- Deep wounds
- Heavy bleeding
- A suspected grass seed lodged in the skin
- Difficulty walking
- Severe pain
- A high temperature
- Signs of infection that continue to worsen
then it's important to have them assessed promptly.
Getting help early often means a simpler recovery and less discomfort for your dog.
Remember, asking for professional advice isn't a sign that you've failed.
It's part of being a responsible owner.
The goal is always the same:
Helping your Staffy get back to feeling happy and comfortable as quickly as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Staffy only lick one paw?
Usually because something is irritating that particular paw. It could be a grass seed, a small injury, an allergy affecting one area or even a sore joint higher up the leg.
Why does my Staffy lick their paws mostly at night?
Many owners notice the behaviour becomes more obvious when the house is quiet. During the day your dog is distracted by walks, meals and family life. At night, they have more time to focus on discomfort or develop repetitive licking habits.
Can grass cause paw licking?
Yes. Grass pollen is a common trigger for dogs with environmental allergies. Some dogs also react to freshly cut grass or seeds that become trapped between the toes.
Is constant paw licking normal?
No.
Occasional grooming is perfectly normal.
Persistent licking that continues day after day usually means it's worth looking for an underlying cause.
Can food affect my Staffy's paws?
In some dogs, yes.
Food sensitivities can contribute to skin irritation, itchy paws and ongoing inflammation. If you suspect food is playing a role, speak with your veterinarian before making major dietary changes.
Will Staffy Essentials stop paw licking?
No supplement can promise to stop paw licking because the behaviour can have many different causes.
However, if licking is related to skin health, overall wellbeing or nutritional support, many owners choose to include Staffy Essentials as part of their dog's daily routine alongside addressing the underlying cause.
Can paw licking be prevented?
Not always.
But regular paw checks, good nutrition, keeping paws clean after walks and paying attention to changes in your Staffy's behaviour can significantly reduce the risk of small problems becoming larger ones.
